Finishing off our December interviews we have Lucy Fur.

Launching herself into the scene in 2000 she has played an impressive array of gigs such as the infamous Tidy Weekenders, Dublin’s R3volution, Polysexual, Summit, Hard South, Twist and Godskitchen, making her one of the hottest names on the scene today. When she is not DJing you can catch her in the studio, releasing gems such as her "Toolkit Series EP" and most recently "Girls @ Work EP" being released on Toolbox.

Now with out any further ado, Lucy Fur

Welcome Lucy, you are no stranger to us as you have been a huge support for our label, and your tracks have been played by pretty much everyone on here. For those who do not know, where are you from and what is the scene like out there at the moment?

I am originally from Kent in Southeast England but live in East London now. I have been mixing for nearly 10 years and still really enjoying it! To be fair, I would say the scene is pretty banging at the moment! There has been a real turnaround this year in hard house with some fantastic tunes being put out there and the club nights have been second to none.

Why hard house over other genres?

Do you really need to ask? I just love it. It's the only music that can give me a permanent grin and make me want to dance at all hours!

Do you remember your first gig and if so how was it?

Yes, my 1st gig was at a pub in Hertfordshire- decks were spread out on a wooden table and there must have only been 20 people there but I shit myself! And of course, that was back in the vinyl age and it was especially difficult to put a needle on the record when you are a) extremely nervous and b) been up since the night before as had been to Sundissential haha! Saying that, I loved it! Few tracks in and the shakes settle!

What tracks are making it into your CD wallet at the moment?

The new Toolkit hasn't left for months! Dave Owens is a legend so there's tracks on there from him, Munkjack and his projects he has done with other people. Most things on Toolbox never leave the wallet- but to be fair, The Beat Ranch has been knocking out a fair few beauties- gotta love a bit of Weazel and Grady G!

When can people see you play out next?

Not sure when this will go out but I have a few bookings over xmas and NY-

  • 31/12/09 Twist TwentyTen event, London
  • 01/12/09 Zoo Years Day, London
  • 02/12/09 Frantic Moondance Payback party, London
  • I then have given myself January off!

What events do you look forward to in the coming year?

Next year is all about my Fur 2010 tour! My tenth year in the scene is something to be very proud of- so I am celebrating with a tour! The UK dates are pretty much finalised from Feb-April but I would like some more worldwide ones haha! The e-flyers will be coming out shortly!

What has been your favorite gig to play at this year?

Playing b2b with Jon BW at the Killertrax/Toolbox/Requiem Haloween Ball was good fun! I'm looking forward to playing at the Tidy & Insomniacz Christmas Party on the 18th Dec as well. I think that's going to be a special night.

Whats your favorite venue to play at and why?

That's a hard one, I love different venues for different reasons. I personally prefer the smaller venues with a mental crowd. Having said that, the Emporium is a wicked venue (home to Storm UK).

What has been your worst experience while up on the decks?

I haven't had one for years and I must admitt, they were mostly back in the days of using vinyl. I don't miss jumping needles and that at all! I think the hardest thing I ever did was do a 90min set in a sweatbox DJ box where the generator was (i'm not kidding it was so hot I thought I was gonna pass out). The monitor blew and I had to mix in my headphones using one Technics deck and one Vestax belt driven thing- only to be told the next DJ was late and could I play on. Jesus. That was hell!

You have had an amazing year on the production front, with your own Toolkit Series and Girls @ Work EP. What have you been working on lately?

Thank you! I could have done more but try to keep fresh. I haven't been in the studio since the summer so I have actually just booked a date to work with Mr Farrell again in Jan and hopefully Weazal in March.

Do you use an engineer for your productions and if so who?

My largest regret is that I didn't start music production myself say 5 years ago- but I need to get over it and make the best of the situation, so I only use people a) I have a laugh with b) knock out some of the best tracks in the scene. I have used Tom Parr, Paul Maddox, Dave Owens, Ben Stevens, Riggsy, Frank Farrell...I would use all these again and will do in 2010.

If you could collab with anyone in the world (dead or alive) who would it be?

Easily RR Fierce. I don't even have to elaborate on that.

If you where not DJing or producing. What would you be doing?

I am partial to 2/3 holidays a year so I would say sunbathing on a beach somewhere haha!

    Chocolate or Vanilla?

    Corona

    Favorite TV show?

    Don't really do TV!

Any last words or shout outs?
